Trump pledges to recognize Jerusalem as united capital of Israel

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu that if elected president, he would recognize Jerusalem as the “undivided capital” of Israel, ending a long-standing US policy which has kept the American embassy in Tel Aviv.
The two met for over an hour in Trump’s private residence in Trump Tower in Manhattan on Sunday.
Among the topics of discussion were the Iran nuclear deal and the regional turmoil caused by the rise of the ISIS terror organization.
During the meeting, Trump said that he “recognized Israel as a vital partner” in the “global war against radical Islamic terrorism,” a statement released by the campaign said.
According to the campaign press release, Trump agreed with the Israeli Prime Minister that while Israelis “want a just and lasting peace with their neighbors,” no peace could be achieved in the region until “Palestinians renounce hatred and violence and accept Israel as a Jewish state.”
Israeli-American cooperation also came up during the meeting, focusing on areas including American military aid, and joint work between the two countries in cyber security.
Netanyahu and Trump also discussed Israel’s use of security fences around its borders to reduce terror attacks and illegal immigration – an example often cited by Trump surrogates in support of the Republican nominee’s proposed southern border fence.
Trump added that if elected this November, he would recognize the entire city of Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital.
“Mr. Trump acknowledged that Jerusalem has been the eternal capital of the Jewish People for over 3000 years,” the campaign said, adding that he would “finally accept the long-standing Congressional mandate to recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel.”
Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Trump’s Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton later on Sunday.
